Network Sees Exodus of Young Talent Amid Restructuring

Channel Seven is experiencing a significant departure of young reporters as the media company implements widespread job cuts across its newsrooms nationwide. Several early-career journalists have opted for voluntary redundancy packages, signaling a period of significant change within the network.

Inga Neilsen Departs After Six Years

Among those leaving is Inga Neilsen, a former 7NEWS Sydney reporter. Neilsen confirmed this week her decision to accept a voluntary redundancy after more than six years with the network. In a social media post, she shared, “After more than six years telling other people’s stories, it’s time to share some news of my own.” Neilsen, who began her career at WIN News Albury and also worked as a police reporter for Nine News Adelaide, reflected on her time at Seven, where she covered major national events including devastating floods and bushfires. “I’ve met people on the worst days of their lives,” she wrote. “What I’ll remember most isn’t the tragedy, but the resilience people showed in the face of it.” She added that she is now looking forward to “something new, focused on creating, connecting, and putting more positivity into the world.”

Estelle Griepink Leaves Melbourne Bureau

In Melbourne, longtime Channel Seven reporter Estelle Griepink has also confirmed her departure. After 11 years with the network, Griepink accepted a voluntary redundancy. She described the decision as “the end of an ERA!!” in an Instagram post, expressing gratitude to her colleagues across various departments. “There is NO job like TV news and I leave with stories to last a lifetime – but I’m so excited about the new chapter and can’t wait to spend more time with my babies,” she stated.

Further Staffing Changes and Industry Concerns

Industry sources indicate that other young reporters may also be impacted. Sydney reporter Grace Fitzgibbon, currently on maternity leave following the birth of her first child, is reportedly among those whose roles have been affected. Brianna Jackson and Amy Clements are also said to be navigating uncertainty as the cuts continue.

These departures coincide with broader restructuring efforts within the company, following its merger with Southern Cross Media. The combined entity, encompassing Seven West Media and Southern Cross Austereo, announced plans to eliminate between 250 and 300 roles nationally. Company leadership cited deteriorating advertising conditions as the reason for needing to “reset our cost base,” with the aim of achieving up to $150 million in annual savings.

In related news, veteran presenter Natarsha Belling is also understood to have left Seven. Hugh Whitfeld has taken over the network’s midday news bulletin. Belling had joined Seven’s National News at Noon approximately 18 months ago, after a more than two-decade tenure at Network Ten, which concluded with her redundancy in 2020.
